Merlin’s how-to guide: Is it time to upgrade your garage door opener?

Is your garage door not performing like it used to? Your garage door motor, an essential part of your garage door opener, could be the problem.

If your garage door gets the shudders, grates and grinds, or is slow to respond, it can make life hard, and noisy! Worse still, it could be a sign that your garage door is a safety concern for you and your family.

Whether it’s slow and clunky, out of date, noisy or unsafe, every home deserves a garage door that is reliable, quiet, and opens seamlessly.

If you’re unsure whether it’s time to upgrade your garage door motor, contact your local Merlin dealer today. They’ll be your voice of reason and let you know if you need a repair, or if you need a new motor for your garage door opener.

Here are some of the questions to consider when thinking about upgrading your garage door motor to a new garage door opener.

My garage door is playing up – do I need to replace my garage door?

It’s a common misconception that if your garage door isn’t functioning like it used to, you need to replace the whole door – costing thousands!

Fortunately, this is often not the case. If an existing garage door is in working condition, it most likely won’t need replacing. Instead, we recommend speaking to one of our professional garage door dealers to help identify and install a new garage door opener best suited to your door type.

Replacing an old motor or upgrading to a Merlin automatic garage door opener will allow your garage door to return to seamless, quiet access.

What are the signs that I need to upgrade the motor on my garage door opener?

Some of the key signs that your garage door motor might need a revamp include:

  • Grating and grinding noises when the door is in operation
  • When your garage door is closed, it’s not sitting flat
  • Your garage door is operating differently, slower, or is more unpredictable than usual
  • It stalls while in operation
  • Your garage door is unresponsive to your remote or wall keypad

How does a garage door motor replacement work?

The process of replacing your garage motor will depend on the type of door you have.

For a roller door system, the garage door opener will be located directly adjacent to the top of the door. From here the opener controls the rolling and unrolling of the door by locking onto the axel of the roller mechanism.

It will also be directly mounted onto the wall of the garage using a bracket.

The installation process will be slightly different for sectional and tilt garage door systems. For these types of doors, the motor is mounted onto the ceiling of the garage, usually at the midpoint of the door.

Installing components of garage door openers, no matter the type of door you have, is a precision task. All elements need to be properly supported and aligned to ensure the safety of the door, but also guarantee it remains in good operation for years to come.

An automatic garage door opener also offers several technical features that need to be properly calibrated to work effectively.

It’s for these reasons that when it comes to installing your new garage door opener, Merlin comes to you! All Merlin products should be installed by our professional dealers and certified installers.

Depending on which Merlin products you’ve selected, it may take between 30 minutes and three hours to install, connect and test your new garage door opener and accessories.

How much does it cost to replace my garage door opener?

This will depend on the size of your garage door, and on your individual needs.

Merlin’s products range from $829 for our essential roller door products to $1,829 for our top-of-the-range sectional garage door openers.
